Notes
General:
Theny Young is the grand daughter of the Rev. John Franklin Young and his
wife Susan Elizabeth Parker who migrated to Laurel County, Kentucky from Greenville, South Carolina in 1812. See "Reverend John Frankling Young 1760-1850 London, Kentucky 1972.
1894, May 19 at McWhorter in Laurel County, Kentucky, Pleasant Young, Sr. states in Theny's pension application that he is 69 years old and is a brother to Theny. Pleasant states that he was present and knows that John McFadden and Theny Young were married on August 20th, 1841 at the bride's father, Pleasant Young's, house in the County of Laurel and State of Kentucky by David Weaver (now deceased). Mr. Young states that he knows that neither John McFadden nor Theny Young had ever been married until they were married to each other. Mr. Young also states that Theny McFadden has never remarried that she still remains the widow of John McFadden.
1899, May 12 edition of the Mountain Echo reports that, "Aunt Theny McFadden, of the western portion of the county, now in her eightieth year, is visiting relatives in London and vicinity. Mrs. McFadden is very active indeed for a woman of her age, and bids fair for several more years of active life."
1908, April 24. Nancy E. Hale has compiled a letter written from Theny McFadden to her daughter Ruth Ann McFadden Bryant. The text of which is as follows:
"Mrs. Ann Bryant
Stroud, Oklahoma
Dear Daughter,
I was not satisfied with the answer I wrote you about the covenant made to Abraham. I was afraid you couldn't read my writing well enough to understand what I meant. The covenant made to Abraham was a sure one. His people had a sure promise that they should be saved, that they should sojourn in a strange land. The covenant was to Abraham and his seed - not unto seeds. It as a promise that was fulfilled. You read your Bible and you will find but more about the covenant. It was a sure one and all Israel was saved. They were a people to be remembered forever. We can read of their troubles while they journeyed on. They lived in a dark age, under types and shadows, till the time appointed for their deliverance. I will tell you when the seven thunders uttered their voices John was about to write. He heard not to write till the twelve tribes of Israel were sealed. There was a hundred and forty and four thousand. We are sure that the first covenant was not broken and I am sure that the lat one will not be. Our case is a dangerous one. We have the promise to come if we will, and whosoever will let him come and take of the water of life freely, and shall we love darkness rather than light. To be carnal minded is death and to be spiritual minded is life. We should shun every appearance of evil. I know when a woman is raising a family they can't live as they wish to. The trouble of a family is trouble we can't pass away. Those that bear children shall have trouble in the flesh. I know that all people can be saved if they will repent. It is written that we must work out our own salvation with fear and trembling. The time is here that people will not endure sound doctrine. You should leave off worldly thoughts and put your trust in the one that is able to save you from sin and death. This world will pass away, for it shall be as it was in the days of Noah. Ann, I thought I would have this printed so you could read for yourself. So, I remain your loving mother till death. Be kind to Abel and the children, for I love them all if I never see them any more.
