Hi Don,
I talked to my great aunt Edna (Parsley) Langley today. She said that her
uncle George Bowling was murdered. I guess you probably knew that. What
all does your wife's brother in law know about his grandfather's murder?
Does he know that George preferred riding a horse instead of driving a
car? George owned a store and he would often ride his horse to London to
pick up some things from a store. One day he was robbed by three men. He
came home mad and told his wife that he was going back to get them. He
said he knew them. Well, before he could do anything one man killed
George. George's wife told everyone that she tried to make him stay home
but he wouldn't listen to her. They got the man that did it and he was
sent to prison. I think she said that his name was Jim Buttry (not sure
of spelling). Edna remembers her grandmother, Lucinda McFadden Bowling.
She said that Lucinda lost her mind when George died. She just went down
hill from then on. Lucinda lived with her daughter, Ruth (my great
grandma) until her death. That's why Ruth was the informant on Lucinda's
death certificate. Edna also knew that Lucinda's parents were Westerfield
and Mary Williams McFadden. Three years ago I should have called up my
great aunts instead of trying to figure out Lucinda cousins. Well, she
told me little things she remembers about Lucinda. She always wore long
dresses. She never wanted to wear a dress above her ankle. Lucinda loved
to make butter. If someone else was making butter then she would say "I
want to churn the butter" and the family would let her. Edna remembers
licking the butter when she was a little girl after Lucinda made it and
she said it tasted so good after grandma Lucinda made butter. I like
little stories like that. She also said that her mother told her that
they were sitting on Alex and Lucinda's porch when Edna was a baby with
them and Alex decided to go bring the cows in and when he went off to do
that he had a heart attack.
Edna's looking for photos from cousins and I'll let you know if she finds
some.
