Letter written by A.S. Moore:
Postmarked 23 February, Louisville, Kentucky (circa 1841)
Mr. John Lewis Dear Sir
You will find that I have drawn of here to be covered by making the calculation from the Book I discovered that I am $210.50 behind with the company with the exception of what you and father owes to me and also I can't see what has become of it as I know that I surtainly never did make use of that much tho the Book is in this way and I can't dispute it but if I should live to git back I will try and make the amt. good to the board. I don't intend to let one of you suffer by my extravagainst tho I can't help but think that I have made some mistake in chargin what I received or haz neglected in letter down some amt. that I have paid out tho if I have I can't rekolect it.
As I can't conveniently get a check from this place to Bowling Green-- and maby have use for part of it I shall keep it until I return.
Our pork is on the Boat called the Great Western. I will start out tomorrow morning which will be the 23rd. I think you may look for me about the 15th of March. If nothing happens I will rite to you when I land at New Orleans and let you know the news.
So Nomore at present but remain
Yours
A.S. Moore
Since I have come to examine more closely into the matter I find that I had not chd. the sale of the bill at the pork houses which was $145.87 -- fifteen hogs we sold to Hufman brot $90. which was put as a credit to the amt. due the pork House -- the balance was $55.87 that I paid in cash which will leave me behind $154.63 -- which I will pay or my property must go for the satisfaction of it --
In my hands at this time $308.25
Bal. due 150.63
This much due to company ---- $462.88
Yours AS
This leaves me intolerable good health. Hoping when this reaches you it may find you enjoying good health and also the family.
Give my respects to my wife. You can tell her on Tuesday 23rd I shall get aboard the Great Western for a sail and hoping that she may have good health whilst I am gone and be well contented. Tell Friend Twyman that I am going to do the best I can -- not to be uneasy. I will come back. He stated whilst he was here that he was afraid that I never would come back but tell him when you see him if I live I will return again the 15th of March.
Also tell him when he brings his beef cattle here not to go to a sausage maker again to sell them as the artikle of beef supplied in that way.
Yours A.S. Moore
