Notes
General:
NOTE!!! If you don't see a source or citation for information on the family of Robert Johnson please proceed with caution. I have just begun to research this line and a lot of it has yet to be documented. A lot of the sources you will see are merely from Indexes and I've yet to view the original documents.

The Robert Johnson family seemed to have moved from Breathitt County to Laurel County around 1856 or 1857 with the spelling of their last name changing from "Johnston" to "Johnson".

Robert Johnson is listed as Robert "Johnston" in the 1850 United States Census for Breathitt County, Kentucky. He's listed as the head of household number 326. Elliott Johnson is listed in household number 320 on the same page.

Robert Johnston is a 72 year old farmer who says he was born in Virginia. Rachel is listed as being 66 years old and also as being born in Virginia.

There are several other Johnston's listed on this same page that appear to be siblings or children of Robert and Rachel.

Be careful during additional research. Breathitt County, Kentucky was formed in 1839 and carved out of Clay, Estill and Perry Counties. All four county's mentioned here have either experienced damage by Confederate Troops during the Civil War or from disastrous fires.

While Robert and Rachel Johnson both state in the U.S. Census reports that they were born in Virginia they would have both been born before the formation of Kentucky. It's possible that the State of Kentucky was formed around them as opposed to them actually migrating from Virginia to Kentucky.

There is a Robert Johnson who shows up in the 1820 Clay County, Kentucky Census report next door to Samuel Johnson. Robert Johnson appears to be married and he and his spouse seem to be under the age of 45. There also seems to be twenty people in the household. A Robert, William and Samuel Johnson appear in the 1830 Clay County, Kentucky Census.
