The Sentinel Echo. London, KY December 16th, 1948. School Girl, 10, Shot Fatally by Playmate, 9. Barbara Jean, 10 year old daughter of Amel and Maggie Swanner Barrett, of London, Route 2, was killed instantly shortly before 3 o'clock Wednesday afternoon when a shotgun in teh hand of a schoolmate, Delbert Barrett, 9, discharged and the full load struck her in the left shoulder and neck. The tragedy occurred at teh home of Lester Barrett, father of Delbert, near the Sunny Brook school on Sinking. The father of the slain girl said he was told by the two children who had been with Barbara Jean that she went to the Lester Barrett home to borrow a scarf to put over her head for protection from the rain, with Delbert accompanying her. They did not know the details of the tragedy. Neither Mr. or Mrs. Lester Barrett had witnessed the shooting. Besides the parents, Barbara Jean, a fourth grade student of Sunny Brook, is survived by one brother, Bailey Ray Barrett, and three sisters, Bernice, Betty Lou and Jo Ann Barrett. Her body was removed to the House Funeral Home pending funeral arrangements.
